Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) at Staunton‑on‑Wye

At Staunton‑on‑Wye Endowed Primary School, our SEND provision is rooted firmly in our school ethos.

At Staunton, our ENRICHING curriculum plants the seeds of knowledge to grow and flourish. Our CARING environment and eco‑culture fosters a deep sense of belonging, rooting children in our community. We celebrate every child’s unique skills, talents and interests, nurturing personal growth through outstanding OPPORTUNITIES.

This ethos underpins everything we do for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Our Inclusive Approach

We are committed to being a fully inclusive school where all children are supported to access their entitlement to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum alongside their peers. We recognise that children learn, develop and progress at different rates, and that some pupils may require additional or different support at times in their learning journey.

High‑quality, inclusive teaching is the first and most important step in meeting the needs of all pupils. Through Quality First Teaching, lessons are carefully planned and differentiated to ensure that learning is accessible, engaging and ambitious for every child. Where further support is needed, it is provided thoughtfully and flexibly, with the aim of removing barriers to learning and building independence, confidence and self‑esteem.

A Graduated and Nurturing Response

Support for pupils with SEND follows a graduated approach, as outlined in our SEND Policy and SEND Information Report. This ensures that provision is timely, proportionate, and closely matched to each child’s specific needs.

Depending on the level of need, pupils may receive:

  • Differentiation and adaptive teaching within the classroom
  • Small‑group or one‑to‑one support where appropriate
  • Pre‑teaching and post‑teaching to build confidence and secure understanding
  • Targeted interventions delivered by trained staff
  • Individual Pupil Passports, created with pupils and parents, which outline strengths, needs, effective strategies and clear outcomes
  • Regular monitoring, assessment and review of progress

Support may be put in place for a fixed period or longer‑term, always with the child’s wellbeing and progress at the centre.

Celebrating the Whole Child

In line with our caring and nurturing ethos, we recognise that supporting SEND is about more than academic progress. We place strong emphasis on pupils’ emotional wellbeing, sense of belonging and personal development.

Pupils with SEND are encouraged and supported to take part fully in all aspects of school life, including:

  • Extra‑curricular activities such as Forest School and after‑school clubs
  • Educational visits and enrichment experiences
  • Inter‑school events, challenges and competitions
  • Pastoral and emotional support programmes designed to build resilience and positive relationships

We strive to ensure that every child feels valued, included and celebrated for who they are.

Skilled Staff and Specialist Support

All staff at Staunton‑on‑Wye Primary School have experience of supporting children with a wide range of SEND. We regularly review staff expertise and access high‑quality professional development, ensuring that practice reflects current guidance and best practice.

Where appropriate, we work closely with a range of external specialist services, including Educational Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, Autism Outreach, SEMH and Behaviour Support, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. We value the expertise these professionals bring and work collaboratively to ensure consistent and effective support.

Partnership with Parents and the Wider Community

We believe that the best outcomes for children are achieved through strong partnerships with parents and carers. Families are fully involved in the identification of needs, planning of provision and review of progress, from the earliest stages.

Support is also available through the Herefordshire Local Offer, which provides clear, accessible information about services and support for children and young people with SEND and their families.
