Curriculum Statement

At Staunton, we provide a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that is rooted in the National Curriculum and carefully enhanced through the use of well-designed, evidence-informed schemes of learning. These schemes ensure clear progression in knowledge and skills over time, enabling pupils to build secure understanding and remember more.

Our curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced, so that new learning builds on what has been taught before. Teachers adapt and refine provision to ensure that learning is relevant, inclusive and responsive to the needs of all pupils.

Curriculum Intent: Designed for Our Community

Our curriculum is shaped by four key drivers:

  • Our core values – Enriching, Caring, Opportunities
  • Our commitment to Eco Schools
  • Our local community context
  • Our pupils’ needs, interests and aspirations

This ensures that learning is meaningful, purposeful and engaging, while also promoting personal development, responsibility and respect.

Implementation: Bringing Learning to Life

A Curriculum Rooted in Real Life

We make meaningful use of our local area to ensure pupils develop a strong sense of place and identity, as well as an understanding of the wider world. Wherever possible, we replace generic content with local, relevant examples. This includes:

  • Studying local history, such as our war memorial and significant community events
  • Exploring the River Wye to deepen geographical and environmental understanding
  • Learning about farming and land use within our rural context
  • Drawing on local figures and stories, such as George Jarvis

Living Our Values Through the Curriculum

Our curriculum promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) and provides rich and varied opportunities for personal growth.

  • Enriching and caring opportunities are visible across all areas of the curriculum and are actively lived by our school community
  • Our Eco Schools ethos is fully embedded, ensuring pupils develop a secure understanding of sustainability and environmental responsibility
  • Pupils engage with real-life issues and community links, fostering citizenship and responsibility

Inclusion and Adaptation

Our curriculum is inclusive by design. Teachers carefully adapt learning to ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can access and succeed in the curriculum. We take into account:

  • The needs of our pupils, including high levels of SEND support
  • Our rural setting, making the most of outdoor learning opportunities
  • Our strong sporting culture
  • Pupils’ interests, prior knowledge and experiences

Through effective adaptation, scaffolding and challenge, we ensure that all pupils know more, remember more and can do more over time.

Inspiring Teaching and Subject Expertise

Teaching is a key driver of our curriculum’s success. Staff are supported to develop strong subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding, ensuring that learning is delivered effectively. We also value the interests, expertise and passions of our staff, asking:

  • Who is best placed to teach specific content?
  • How can teachers’ strengths enrich learning?
  • How can we create memorable learning experiences?

Flexible and Purposeful Outcomes

While our curriculum is carefully structured, we allow flexibility in how pupils demonstrate their learning, ensuring outcomes reflect depth of understanding rather than task completion. Rather than fixed end products, pupils may:

  • Create cartoons, illustrations or models
  • Produce podcasts or presentations
  • Design murals or collaborative artwork
  • Participate in performances, exhibitions or live events

This approach ensures pupils can apply their knowledge creatively and meaningfully, strengthening retention and engagement.

Impact: What Our Pupils Achieve

As a result of our curriculum, pupils:

  • Develop secure, well-sequenced knowledge and skills across all subjects
  • Are able to articulate their learning and make connections
  • Show high levels of engagement, curiosity and motivation
  • Demonstrate positive attitudes to learning and strong personal development
  • Are well prepared for the next stage of their education and life in modern Britain

Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully designed to meet the needs of our community. It combines strong academic foundations with creativity, responsibility and real-world relevance, ensuring that every child is supported to achieve their full potential.
