PE and Sport

Intent

At Staunton, our Physical Education curriculum aims to ensure all pupils enjoy being active and develop the confidence, skills and knowledge needed for lifelong participation in physical activity. We want pupils to:

  • Develop secure fundamental motor skills such as balance, coordination and agility.
  • Understand rules, strategies and tactics across a range of sports and activities.
  • Learn how to exercise safely, understanding the benefits of physical activity for physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Demonstrate confidence, teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship.

Our PE curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced, ensuring equality of access and high expectations for all pupils, including those with SEND. Skills and knowledge are built progressively year on year.

Implementation

PE is taught through a structured two‑year rolling programme using Get Set 4 PE, ensuring coverage of the National Curriculum and clear progression. Lessons are practical, engaging and inclusive.

Key aspects include:

    • Teaching the three building blocks of PE: motor skills, rules and tactics, and healthy participation.
    • Adaptive teaching, varied equipment and appropriate challenge so all pupils can succeed.
    • Ongoing support and training provided by the PE coordinator to ensure confident, high‑quality delivery.

    Curriculum time and opportunities

    • Key Stage 1: 1 hour of PE per week plus active playtimes, focusing on fundamental movement skills and learning to ride a bike without stabilisers.
    • Key Stage 2: 2 hours of PE per week, including games, gymnastics, dance and athletics.
    • Pupils take part in outdoor and adventurous activities with local providers, including paddleboarding, climbing, orienteering and canoeing.
    • Bikeability is completed in Class 3, and all pupils take part in two weeks of swimming, aiming to swim 25 metres by the end of Year 6.

Physical activity is further promoted through play leaders, after‑school clubs and participation in sports festivals and competitions.

    Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is seen in pupils’ enjoyment, skills and attitudes:

    • Pupils show improving physical competence and confidence across a wide range of activities.
    • They demonstrate a positive attitude towards physical activity and understand how to stay healthy and active.
    • Pupils work well with others, showing respect, teamwork and good sportsmanship.

    Assessment and review

Teachers use ongoing assessment within lessons to check understanding, support progress and inform next steps. Leaders monitor provision through lesson observations, participation levels and pupil voice to ensure the curriculum is having the intended impact.

By the time pupils leave Staunton, they are confident, healthy and motivated to take part in physical activity and are well prepared for future sporting opportunities and active lifestyles.

    Walk to School

To encourage active and healthy living, we encourage as many children as possible to walk or ride to school. This year during walk to school week 64 pupils managed to walk over the week. This has encouraged pupils to walk and ride to school throughout the year.

    Herefordshire Cricket

We have partnered with Herefordshire Cricket to increase opportunities in the teaching of cricket at school. In KS2, each Class gets the opportunity for high quality cricket coaching for a term. This not only teaches the fundamentals of cricket but underpins many aspects of the PE curriculum such as teamwork, communication and using gross motor skills.
