Intent
At Staunton‑on‑Wye Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum aims to inspire creativity, develop problem‑solving skills and enable pupils to design and make purposeful products that meet real‑life needs. We want children to become confident, reflective designers who can evaluate and improve their work. The curriculum supports cross‑curricular learning, particularly in Maths, Science and Art, and makes meaningful ECO links to sustainability, our local environment and Forest School. Cooking and nutrition are a key focus, equipping pupils with essential life skills and an understanding of healthy eating and global food cultures.
Implementation
We use the Kapow Primary Design and Technology scheme of learning to deliver the National Curriculum. Kapow provides a clear, sequenced and progressive curriculum that follows the design process of design, make and evaluate, underpinned by technical knowledge. Learning is structured as a spiral curriculum, allowing pupils to revisit key skills with increasing complexity. Lessons include practical, hands‑on experiences, design briefs and opportunities for evaluation, with differentiation built in so that all pupils can access and succeed in DT.
Impact
As a result of our DT curriculum, pupils develop confidence, creativity and independence. They can talk knowledgeably about their work using appropriate technical vocabulary and evaluate their designs thoughtfully. Pupils meet end‑of‑key‑stage expectations and leave primary school with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for secondary education and everyday life, including an appreciation of how design choices can impact people, communities and the environment.
